Blackhawks Scratch Starter, But Still Soar To Sweet Sixteen
March 21, 2023 (Hutchinson, KS) – Southeastern CC (IA), one of the top four programs in total wins in NJCAA history, has been missing from the tourney since 2011. And today, a few minutes befoe game time, Isaiah Griffit, the team’s 2nd leading scorer, was scratched from the line-up due to illness.
But that was about all that went wrong for the Blackhawks. jumped out to a 13-2 lead early, but after a six point run by Snead State, the Parsons found their way back into the game, and trailed by only 4 at the break, 35-31.
Tre Whitehead III scored 17 of his game high 24 to lead the Parsons charge before halftime. The Blackhawks leading scorer, Deng Deang put in 13 of his team high 19 also before the break.
In the end it was too much balance for Southeastern as all five starters ended in double figures. In support of Deang, Jaylon Searles went for 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 dimes. Davion Bailey finished with 13 plus 4 dishes. Jack Wetzel and Jhonny Tovar Mendez each had 12.
In addition to Whitehead’s 24, Ty Briscoe had 10. Mario Andrews topped all rebounders with 13.
Southeastern will have a second round match-up with Odessa College, the #3 seed, at 6:00.
