Top Seed John A. Logan First To Reach Semifinals

March 23, 2023 (Hutchinson, KS) – First quarterfinal game of the day finds #1 John A Logan vs. #8 seed Midland College squaring off to see who would be the first entry into the final four.

Logan, riding a 28 game win streak, took the lead for good late in the second half for a 74-70 victory putting them into Friday’s semifinal action against the winner of #13 seed Dodge City and #12 Tallahassee CC which will take on Friday at 5:00.

Midland didn’t hear the starters piston but Logan did. Eight minutes in the Chaps fell behind by 16 points. Nothing was going right for the Southwest District Champions.

Thirteen points each from Doug Young and Trent Johnson powered the Chaps comeback. The Vols took a 39-35 lead to the locker room. James Dent had 11 for Logan in the first period.

Midland matched the Volunteers point for point in the second stanza, each with 39, taking a four point lead at the 8 minutes mark on a lay-up by Christian Vellegas.

Two Vols FTs by James Dent with just over 3 minutes to play put Logan back up two, 61-59. Midland was not able to recapture the lead.

Logan (31-2), got 20 from Dent to lead their attack. He was 9 of 10 from the charity stripe, including going 4 for 4 in the last :20. Quimari Peterson followed that with 16, twelve came from Isaiah Stafford (plus 8 boards), and 11 by Curtis Lewis.

Doug Young and Trent Johnson provided the firepower for the Chaparrals, each tossing in 20 points. Keonte Jones added 12 and Villegas topped off with 11. Midland finishes up with a 28-7 record.
