Here Is A Look At How Top 25 Teams Did Friday Night
#1 Salt Lake CC needed five extra minutes to resolve the dispute with Odessa, but emerge 102-95 victors. Little separation between the two teams as they were tied 38 all at half and at 82 end of regulation. The Bruins, now 7-0, did have a ten point cushion 8 minutes into the game, but once Odessa caught up, the game was back and forth. The game had 15 ties and 14 lead changes. Chase Adams posted a game-high 33 points for Salt Lake, while Quincy McGriff scored 17 points off-the-bench. Doctor Bradley contributed 16 points and Jaquan Scott finished with 11 points. Jackson Last scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. The Wranglers (7-3) see their 7 game win streak halted. Daniss Jenkins netted 30 for Odessa (9-21, 3-7, 9-11 shooting) along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Dian Wright-Forde found his way to 21 points with 3 steals, tying Jenkins and Kiree Huie with team leading six rebounds. Odessa goes to Pensacola State on Monday. Salt Lake has a little holdiday time and doesn’t play until Dec. 3 when the host the Salt Lake Classic taking on Northwest CC (WY).
#3 Kilgore College struggled to get the ball through the rim, but so did Angelina College. The Rangers, playing at home, just happened to put a few more shots down, four actually, to get the ten point win, 60-50. Kilgore led 27-19 at intermission. Angelina stands at 3-5, losers of five of their last six. They were led by Quandre Bullock’s 16 points. Caleb Johnson and Errol White each had 12, White complimented his effort with 12 rebounds giving him a double double. Da’Shan Nelson had top billing for Kilgore with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 takeaways. KC now plays Cedar Valley CC Saturday. The Roadrunners return home to Angelina for a bout with Strength ‘N Motion Saturday after Thanksgiving.
#4 Eastern Florida State College, got a stern test from Spartanburg Methodist College (SC) in the Turkey Day Classic held at SouthWestern Florida State’s Suncoast Credit Union Arena. The pesky Pioneers put together a solid first half, and found their to the locker room leading 45-36. However, the Titans put up a Grant ( a 50 spot) in the second frame, and came away 86-79 winners. Derrick Butler had a big day for the Titans, scoring 26 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Reggie Hill had 15, with Roberts Berze and Vlad Salaridze each finished with 14 points. The Titans will see #19 Snow College today at Noon EST. No stats available for Spartanburg, who suffered their first loss of the season against 5 victories. The EFSC Titans will play #20 Snow College at Noon EST today. Snow lost to host and No. 19 Florida Southwestern 67-53 in the other game Friday. Spartanburg Methodist plays Florida Southwestern at 2 p.m.
#8 Indian Hills CC coasted at home with a 92-67 dismantling of McCook CC (NE) in the Bowling RV Classic at the Hellyer Center in Ottumwa. But the dismantling didn’t occur until late in the first half. McCook scored the first four points and led 9-4 at the 12:30 mark. Indian Hills (5-1) did not take the lead until eleven minutes left when Ahren Freeman made a lay-up to make it 11-9. With the score tied at 16, the Warriors took complete control of the game finishing the final 7 1/2 minutes of the half 24-8, for a 50-24 margin at the stoppage. The turnaround was a total team effort as 12 Warriors played in the half, and all scored. Taj Anderson did all the damage for Indian Hills, scoring 17 of his game high 22 after the break. Braxton Bayless and Andre Harris ended up with 12 and 11 respectively. Twelve of the thirteen who dressed, scored for the Warriors, and no only one player was in action for more than twenty minutes. Julian Lual had scoring honors for McCook, ending with 13. Beni Fungula followed with 11, plus a team high 7 rebounds. MCC (1-7), have now lost six consecutive, to teams with a cumulative record of 27-6. The Indians will hook up with North Central Missouri College (DII power) Saturday in the final day of the Bowling RV Classic. Meanwhile, Indian Hills gets NEO, a twenty point loser to Casper yesterday.
#11 New Mexico JC (6-2) recovered well from their two point loss to #1 Salt Lake on Thursday. The T-birds ran away from Trinity Valley CC, winning 92-61. Valley, now 3-4, has lost three in a row to Region V schools. NMJC out shot 54% to 29 from the field, 46% to 30 from behind the line, and went +13 on the boards. Elijah Beard and Mouhamed Mbaye matched 15 point outings for New Mexico. Dario Domningos had a dub-dub posting 13 points and game high 16 rebounds. Dannie Smith, Chance Gross and Kenyuoe Ondaan all contributed 12, Smith adding 7 assists. Gross and Ondaan’s efforts were off the bench. MJ Leslie the lone Cardinal in double figs with 14. Trinity Valley hopes to get back on track with a home game vs. Strength-n-Motion Tuesday. The Thunderbirds will hop over the Lone Star State to take on Bossier Parish CC on Wednesday.
#15 South Georgia State College put together their stingiest defensive effort of the season in beating Denmark Tech 57-30. The Panthers, out of region 10, hasn’t had much success offensively since the opening game. That game they put up 84, but through five games entering this contest they were averaging 62 ppg. The Hawks came in as the #1 defensive scoring team in the country. And the defense did it again holding Denmark to less than half of their season average. Tech only had five at half. SGSC used their suffocating “D” to offset their own offensive shortcomings. The Hawks had a miserable day shooting, going 36/23/42 %. That’s right 7-17 on free tosses. AJ Spencer and Turahn Thompson combined for 22 points, each getting eleven to lead South Georgia State (5-0). Each gathering 6 rebounds as well, two behind team high leader Malik Crawford’s 8. Jayce Moore had a special day with six boards, 8 steals, and earns the hamburger helper awards with 9 dimes. The Hawks are back in action today (Saturday) hosting Caldwell Tech, also from region 10. Denmark Tech (2-4) concludes play Saturday in the Applebee’s Okefenokee Classic vs. Andrew College.
#16 Western Wyoming CC, hosting the Western Invite, defeated College of Southern Nevada in OT, 80-77. It was the second time this year the Mustangs have beaten Southern Nevada. The first time was a 85-71 victory back on Nov. 4. Trevor Trost carded 16Pts, 8Rebs, and 3Asts in the win. Andre Cruz pulled a double with 13Pts/13Rebs. Others in double figures were Azerien Stephens 11Pts/4Rebs and Marcus Collins 10Pts/3Asts. Western Wyoming improve to 8-0! Next game is Saturday vs. USU Eastern. Dominique Ford scored a game high 22 points for Southern Nevada, while Darren Jones put in 18. Tucker Peterson and Kendrick Gilbert.
Southern Nevada will play at Central Wyoming Saturday.
