Saluqis Defeat Cleveland State in Overtime for Appalachian District Championship

UPDATE: The Saluqis received the no. 23 seed and will play #10 seed Coffeyville CC (KS) (22-3), an at-large selection from the Plains District (Region 6). That game will be played at 4:30 CDT on Monday, April 19, at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson, KS. All 23 games of the national championship is viewable (for a small fee) on NJCAATV http://njcaa.org/network.

Tournament MVP Jamey Sanders scored 16 points and Kendrick Holland came off the bench to add 16 points and five assists (including 12 points in the second half) to lead the Southwest men’s basketball team to a 70-59 overtime victory over Cleveland State in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII championship game in Gallatin, Tennessee!

Brandon Mason, the Saluqis’ leading scorer on the season, scored nine of his 11 points in the extra period as Southwest outscored Cleveland State 17-6 after the game was tied at 53-53 at the end of regulation. Juan Cajelli scored five of his seven points in overtime and was also the team’s leading rebounder with 10. With the win, the Saluqis (11-4) advance to the NJCAA National Tournament April 19-24 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The Saluqis limited Cleveland State to 29.3 percent field goal shooting for the game and just 1 of 11 (9.1 percent) in the extra period. Southwest shot 40.9 percent for the game and made 6 of 7 shots in overtime for 85.7 percent.
