Trinity Valley erases halftime deficit, beats Brunswick CC

Reese McDonald (6’2″ SO from Raleigh, NC) got the Dolphins of Brunswick CC out of the gates fast, pouring in 19 first half points. His effort gave the #24 Seed the upper hand at the break, 52-45. BCC shot 52.6% (61.1% from distance) while Trinity Valley struggled from the field, going 17-43 (39.5%), and only 3 for 11 on threes.

Trinity Valley actually took the lead at 45-44 at the 2:00 minute mark, but Brunswick closed out the period on a 8-0 run.

In the second half, Brunswick’s shooting didn’t really change, but the Cardinals matched them shot for shot and then a few. TVCC was relentless in chipping away that the lead, and went ahead 59-58 with just over 15:00 left on a Deshawn Davis FT. Valley took their largest advantage of 7, with just over 6 minutes remaining in the contest.

Down 82-75 at with 5 to go, Brunswick had a 11-4 run to tie the game at 86 with just under 3 to play. Brunswick, however, was not able to flip the score, as Trevon Fuller lay-up with 120 seconds left put Trinity Valley ahead for good.

Valley was paced by Davis’ game high 35 points, going 7-14 from outside the arc. Davis also posted 7 helpers and 4 steals. Two other Cardinals scored in double digits, Darry Moore kicked in 14 and Trevon Fuller added 13. The Dolphins were led by Christian Jones with 24, followed by Reese McDonald’s 20 and Josiah Shackleford who had 17.

Rebounding proved to be a big factor for the Cardinal’s reversal of faith, especially in the second half. Tuongthach Gathek had game high 11 to lead TVCC. Shackleford added 8 boards to lead Brunswick. McDonald passed out 7 assist.

With the win, Trinity Valley stands at 23-2, and advances to the second round with a game vs. #8 seed Cowley College (21-4), the Plains District Champion. That game is slated for Tuesday, April 20 at 4:30 in the Sports Arena.

Brunswick CC (Supply, NC) sees their stellar season come to an end with a record of 15-4. They made the tourney as the Atlantic District Champion. This was the programs 2nd appearance at the National Tournament.
