(Feb 5, 2022) Twin Falls, ID –
TWIN FALLS, Idaho – #9 College of Southern Idaho suffered a 79-72 set back to 22nd-ranked Snow College Saturday, dropping into fourth place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. Snow is in second behind undefeated Salt Lake CC.
This was the third meeting of the two teams this season, with the Golden Eagles taking the first two, by 10, 88-78, also in Twin Falls. And by six a couple of weeks ago in Utah, 85-79.
The loss, CSI’s 3rd straight, puts them at 18-7 and 6-6 in the SWAC. Snow is heading in the opposite direction, having won four in a row and sits at 19-5, 9-4 in conference play.
Snow led by as much as 11 halfway thru the first period, 25-14. Within five minutes CSI had cut it to one, 29-28, after a 14-4 run. The Badgers were able to stop the bleeding, but that momentum carried Southern Idaho to a 39-36 halftime lead.
For a few minutes at the start the second half, it looked like the Eagles were going to seize control. CSI took their largest lead at the 16:22 mark, 44-39, on a Marcellious Lockett trey. Up to that point, the game resembled a tennis match with the lead bouncing around from one side of the court to the other. All together there were 13 lead changes and 15 ties.
The last tie was breached with just over three minutes to play on a Snow College three by Hagen Wright. That put the Badgers up 67-64. Snow put the game on ice with a 15-5 run, started by Wright’s 3, topped off by a Clayton Southwick jam. Daylen Williams hit a three as time was expiring for the Eagles, bringing the final deficit under ten.
Snow had four scorinng over ten points. Southwick lead the way with 24 points and 4 assists, along with six rebounds. Chase Potter contributed 12 points, with 5 boards, 5 steals and 3 helpers. Ben Tew and Drake Allen both finished with eleven. Tew added five rebounds, Allen seven, to go along with his 6 assists and four steals. Wright had game high 8 rebounds for the winners.
Southern Idaho got 16 points from Chayce Polynice plus six rebounds and 3 blocks. Lockett deposited 14 points, while Chris James had 13 points, 6 boards, and 4 apples. Williams ended with ten points and a team high seven rebounds.
The Golden Eagles out shot Snow from the field but CSI finished with 15 turnovers to Snow’s seven. Both teams had good nights at the charity stripe, shooting over 80%. However, Snow’s advantage was assisted by the fact they made more FTs (19) than CSI attempted (16).
The Golden Eagles host USU-Eastern Wednesday. CSI will be looking to snap their three game plunge as well as avenge two season losses to the other Eagles in the SWAC. Snow moves on to their second of four straight road games with a tilt at Colorado Northwestern on Thursday.
