Short Handed Manatees Fall To #7 Indian River

Bradenton, Florida – A balanced scoring attack led #7 Indian River State College (IRSC) over State College of Florida, 88-78. Five Pioneers scored in double figures with Tyeree Bryan leading the way with 19 points. Indian River has moved up two spots in Tuesday’s NJCAA’s latest poll, now sitting at #5.
The Pioneers had a slow start on the offense end of the floor and were behind 9-4 with just under five minutes played in the contest. IRSC came back strong and took a 10-point advantage when Doug Young connected on a three-point basket making the score 19-9. Both teams continued to trade baskets and the Pioneers were ahead 43-32 at the half.
IRSC built a 20-point lead with just under seven minutes to play in the second half, 72-52. But the Manatees pulled to within 10 points, but could get no closer. The victory sends the Pioneers record to 17-2 on the year, 2-0 in the Southern Conference.
Leading scorers for the ballgame were Bryan 19, Young 15, Jonathan Cisse 15, Bendji Pierre 14, and A.J. Cajuste with 12 points. IRSC did a great job on the rebounding side of things besting the Manatees 46-32. Pierre pulled in 14 rebounds followed by Bryan with 13. Cajuste also notched a double-double with Bryan and Pierre by dishing out 12 assists.
The Manatees dressed only 7 players, who all played, and got scoring from 6. Leading the way was Jacari White, who chalked up 24 points. Pop Weathers added 16 with six assists. Ametri Moss put in 13, Clarence Cummings III had 11 to go along with three boards. Cobey Carraway netted ten.
With the loss, SCF falls to 11-9, 0-2 in the conference. The Manatees have now lost four in a row, and 6 of their last eight. Next up for State College is a home tilt with #15 Florida SouthWestern State Wednesday, January 19.
The Pioneers will travel to Miami, Florida to take on Miami Dade College, also on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
