No. 13 SLCC Falls in Rocky Mountain District (Region 18) Championship

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 10, 2021) – The No. 13 Salt Lake Community College men’s basketball team fell in defense of its 2020 Region 18 tournament title, falling in the championship game Saturday.
 
Playing at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, the Bruins dropped a 94-84 championship game matchup with No. 10 Southern Idaho, falling short of earning Region 18’s automatic bid to the 2021 NJCAA National Tournament. Salt Lake is now 20-4 overall with the loss.
 
Southern Idaho performed well offensively in the first half, taking a 47-33 lead as Salt Lake shot just 34.6 percent from the floor (9-of-26) and was just 11-of-21 from the free-throw line. The Bruins turned on their own offensive firepower in the second half, shooting 53.1 percent (17-of-32), but Salt Lake could never get closer than six points – 90-84 with :49 left – in the comeback attempt.
 
SLCC struggled offensively throughout the game, hitting only 9-of-27 shots from three-point range and going just 23-of-37 at the free-throw line. 
 
Bendji Pierre led Salt Lake with 14 points, with three players – Jackson LastMarvin Price and Quincy McGriff – all scoring 12 points apiece. Felix Lemetti posted 11 points, while Max Watson scored 10 points. 
 
Salt Lake will now await a potential at-large bid into the 2021 NJCAA tourney. The NJCAA national tournament is scheduled for April 19-24 in Hutchinson, Kan. The seeds, pairings, and at-large recipients will be announced Sunday, April 11, on the live selection show aired on NJCAATV at 7:00 EDT.
