Monroe College Wins Hutch Opener Over South Georgia State

(Hutchinson, KS) March 20, 2023 – In the first game of the 2023 Men’s DI National Championship Tournament, #16 Monroe College (NY) paced themselves to 37 to 28 halftime lead over #17 South Georgia State. Led by five players in double figures, the Mustangs stretched the lead in the 2nd half to win going away, 83-63.

The Mustangs move on to the second round to take on #1 seed John A Logan (29-2) Tuesday at 2:00 PM. Monroe is now (29-4) while SGSC falls to 26-8.

Topping the charts for Monroe was Tyje Kelton with game high 22 points. Melvin Council, Jr added 19 (7-11 from the field). Ziare Wells put in 12 with Handel Mohammed finished with 11. Kelton and Mohammed controlled the boards, each grabbing 10.

South Georgia State got 17 from Carlos Hart adding a team high 7 rebounds. Keith Lamar was the only other Hawk in doubles with 10.
