First Overtime Game In Tourney Goes To Tallahassee
March 22, 2023 (Hutchinson, KS) – It took 14 games in the tournament before we had our first overtime game. #12 seed Tallahassee CC and #5 seed Salt Lake CC met to to fill in the sixth quarter-finalist spot for Thursday’s games.
The game was a battle from the start. Neither team gained much of an advantage throughout the first half. Salt Lake did lead by as much as 9 in the first period, but the Eagles chipped away and after 20:00 minutes the teams had basically traded baskets as Salt Lake took a 43-41 lead into the break.
Each team made some runs in the second half to appear to have taken control, but as the clock wound down, the game was never far from two possessions either way.
Salt Lake went on a 13-0 run midway through the 2nd half to turn a 59-54 deficit into a 67-59 lead with just under 11:00 to play.
About five minutes later, after falling behind by ten, 73-63, Tally put together a 17-0 of their own to go ahead, 80-73 wat the 3:30 mark
Another stretch of 10-2 flipped the score again, giving Salt Lake a one point lead, 83-82.
A free throw by Tom Mark with 16 tics left tie the score and eventually put the game into OT.
The extra period was just like the rest of the game, nip and tuck, back and forth…until…Salt Lake went up four, 93-89 after a Hunter Erickson lay-up with :17 on the clock. Isaiah Cathey made 1 of 2 free tosses, and with 3 seconds left, Malachi Davis launched a three wing left which found the bottom of the net, with…an AND ONE!
After an officials review, the three stood, and Davis calmly made the winning point with the old fashion 4 point play conversion. Final Score: Tallahassee 94, Salt Lake 93.
Davis not only had game high, but finished with a tournament high 48 points, 5 rebounds and 4 dimes. Ja’Quavian Florence added 22 in the win.
For Salt Lake, Jalen Weaver carded 22, Jared Garcia had 18 with 14 rebounds, Jaxon Pollard 14 and 10 boards, Alejandro Vazques 11 and Andre Mulbea 10. Erickson passed out 7 assists.
Tallahassee ( moves into Thursday’s elite eight to take on #13 seed Dodge City at 6:00.
