Arizona Western Olés Their Way To Convincing Defeat Of Cochise
(January 29, 2022) Douglas, AZ – The Arizona Western Matadors (18-3, 11-1) replaces Cochise in the top sport of the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference with an 80-62 windfall over the Apaches in Douglas Saturday night. Cochise (21-3, 12-2) now sits one game behind the Mats in the ACCAC standings.
The Matadors jumped out to an 18-10 lead midway through the first half thanks to a Mojus Mojus jumper, capping off a 9-0 run. Western was six points better than CC in the first half, 36-30, and finished out 12 better in the second, 44-32, making the final 18 point margin.
Mojus, a 6’3 SO guard from San Diego, was the key cog in the AWC attack. His mojo inspired the Mats with his 30 point, 8 rebound, five steal, and 2 blocked shots performance. Najeeb Muhammad scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game, garnering 16 points, 7 rebounds and issuing 5 dimes. Yaxel Lendeborg added 13.
Mojus opened the second half on an 8-0 run, hitting a three-pointer before a floater in the lane and three free throws from Evan Butts gave the Matadors a 43-30 lead in the early minutes of the second period.
A Jimmy Sorunke dunk put the Matadors up 52-37 at the 14-minute mark of the second half. The Apaches cut into the lead a little, but when Nate Duda hit a three with 8:00 left to play, Western’s lead was extended to 62-45.
Three minutes later, Mojus continued his hot shooting, burying a three from the corner to give the Matadors their largest lead of 20 at 69-49. For the game, Mojus hit 12 of 17 FGs (71%), including 6 of 10 from three point land.
No stats were available from Camp Cochise. The Apaches, after a torrid start to the season winning 19 of their first 20 games, have now lost 2 of their last four. Next up is a home match-up with Glendale CC on Wednesday.
The Matadors return to the House, hosting Mesa on Wednesday.
