#9 Shelton State Gets By #24 Roane State, Moves Into Sweet Sixteen

Hutchinson, KS – Shelton State Buccaneers, the South District Champions led big early, saw Roane State trim it to 11 midway through the second half, before pulling away down the stretch to win 91-74.

Roane State, in their first ever trip to Hutch, made Shelton work for everything they got in the second half. After falling behind 50-34 at the break, they held steady in the second. The Appalachian District Champs matched the 15th ranked team basket for basket, being outpointed only 41-40.

Shelton, now 30-4, moves on to the second round action, Tuesday, March 15, where they’ll meet #8 seed Odessa College at 4:30. Leading the way for the Buccaneers was Antonio Thomas with 17 points. He was followed by Thaddeus Williams with 15. Amorey Womack and Willie Johnson each finished with 13, Johnson added 4 helpers. Andres Burney totaled 12. Jaykwon Walton had team high 6 rebounds.

Roane (18-10) got 14 from Floyd Williams, 13 each from Nate Spivey, and Kavon Blankenship, and a dozen from both Jawaun Moore and Alec Kegler. Spivey dished out 5 assists and Austin McKeehan grabbed game high 8 boards.

Shelton, winners of 6 in a row, are making their fourth straight national tourney appearance.
